What is a Bong?

A bong is used for smoking cannabis or hash and comes in every conceivable shape, size, colour and material. The most commonly used materials are glass and acrylic, but ceramic and bamboo are also available.

The bong originates from the Hookah (or water pipe) from the Middle-East. The biggest difference between a bong and a regular water pipe is the tube width through which the smoke is drawn. With a bong this is larger so it can contain more smoke.

Bongs use a mechanism in which the most work is done by suction. As you may know, a bong is usually composed of the following parts:

  • Mouthpiece — this is where your lips are pressed onto the bongs.
  • Chamber — the place where all the smoke goes once the weed has been burned.
  • Bowl — a place for holding your weed and lighting it.
  • Downstem — some bongs with sliders don’t have this.

How to use a Bong?

Bongs are easy to use with the following steps:

  1. Pour water in the bong. There should be enough water so that the downstem is completely submerged.
  2. Pack the bowl with about half a gram of freshly ground buds.
  3. Place your mouth on the mouthpiece, light the bowl and slowly inhale.
  4. Once the chamber is full of milky-white smoke, release the carb (or pull the slider) and inhale the remainder of smoke from the chamber. Exhale and return the slider.

Cannabis smoke is harmful as it contains ash, tar and several other harmful compounds. Because this gets partly filtered by the water, it helps you smoke a bit healthier. Make sure you regularly replace the water inside the bong.
